Who Do You Think You Are? Presentation Final Exam Hour 1 5/14/2015
Here is my Prezi of my family tree. I decided to track illnesses and whether they were passed down or not. Besides illnesses, I included birth and death years and occupations. I was able to find some origin, like from where my family came.
For this infographic, I included the origins of family illnesses, which are mostly genetic. I also included some information on family origins.
Interview 1
This interview was done with my mom's mom. She helped me a lot with seeing what her life was like and information on my ancestors.
Interview 2
This interview was done with my dad's mom. She is the oldest living grandma I have. She lived through a lot of events in history, and had a lot of very interesting information to share with me.
Email to Family Member
I wrote this email to my mom's mom. She is known for keeping track of family, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays. That is why I emailed her to ask for information. She called me later to respond to my email.
Family Echo Family Tree
This is just a basic outline of my family tree. It is very large and includes a lot of different generations.

Read THIS blog post by a teacher. I mean actually read it. Take it in. Think about it. And then, write about it. What do you think about it? What is the teacher trying to say? In your own words explain what "the main event" is.
I think the teacher is partially correct. If it were true that leaning is not the main event, but learning life lessons is, then I would thing that there should be a better way to go about that. Learning about specific topics and subjects is what we are supposed to learn. Courage, adversity, perseverance, focus, and other life lessons can be supplementally learned at the same time, but are not the primary focus. The teacher is trying to say that the grades don't matter as much, but its about teaching yourself how to get through hardships. I believe both are important. The main event to the author is learning life lessons over content. To me the main event is leaning content AND life lessons, therefore creating the building blocks and the foundation to start a college career and build on that foundation. By the time you graduate college, you should know a lot in your field or major, and you should have learned things about yourself, others, and life as well.

3 day weekend... how was it? Give me a good story or something funny that happened this weekend. Go.
It was a busy weekend, to say the least. It started off well on saturday with prom. We ate at Avenues Bistro on 63rd and Wornall. They took a really long time, and so we left there at about 9:05 when Prom had already begun. I was driving 95, and got to the school in about 14 minutes, so we made good time. Went to the dance which was fun, then went to afterprom. I won a $25 Freddy T's gift card and had fun with my friends there. I had an after party that started at 3AM. We went to sleep at 6 AM, but i got up at 10 AM to go to the hospital because my sister had surgery saturday night to remove her appendix. Sunday night I went back out to a party, and I am completely exhausted.

Tell me ALL about what your idea is for your stop-motion animation. I need detail. Who is going to help you take photos? What props do you need? Where do you plan on shooting? EXPLAIN everything.
I plan on mowing the lawn and taking pictures of the project. I will use a tripod to keep the pictures the same. I will use the natural sunlight during the afternoon to shoot the stop motion animation. I will have my friend, Conner help with taking the photos. I will mow during that time, or vice versa. I need my mower, long grass, a tripod, Conner, and the sunlight. I plan on doing this in my back yard. This stop-motion animation will show the evolving of my yard, as i cut it. It will show the mower going back and forth to cut the lawn neatly.

Tell me all about your weekend and please share photos!
This weekend was pretty bad. Friday and Saturday were good in that i was able to hang out with my friends during that time. Saturday night, everything went to hell in a hand-basket. I arrived at one of my friend's bonfires. One person was barely conscious because he was too drunk. His vitals later crashed and we ended up taking him to Fire Station 81 in Stilwell. I had to perform life-saving measures on him in the car, then transferred him to Squad 81 and Medic 81, who transferred him over to Medic 1145, who took him to Saint Luke's South. He is now at KU Med, sedated. Now, the police are all over us, and want to start charging people, even though I saved his life.

April Fool's Day 2015
What do you love most about this time of year? Explain why you love it.
I love today!!! I love April Fool's Day because I can prank my parents and friends. Now for this time of year, I love April because it warms up outside. I can begin to fish, hunt, and camp out with friends again, after a long winter of not being able to do those things. I also hate cold weather, so now that the temperature is in the 70's-80's, i'm very happy. We are also nearing Graduation time, and that is very exciting. It is also scary, because i start to realize how fast everything is going, and I must keep up and not fall behind.

Did you complete the photo scavenger hunt? What kind of fun pictures were you able to capture? Did you do all your photos at school or did you do some at home over the weekend? Share one of your favorites.
I did complete the photo scavenger hunt Friday at school, before the end of the hour. I was able to capture fun photos of people walking away, people waving, and of someone laughing in the hallway. I have attached one of the photos (the one of the hallway) because of how it looks. The end of the hallway leads to a gold door, which I think symbolizes graduation.

What do you know about photography and/or photo editing? Do you take photos? How do you take photos? Do you edit photos before posting them on social media? How do you edit them? Explain any background or knowledge you have about photography and photo editing. Do you like it? Do you have any interest?
I do not know anything about photography. Sometimes, using my iPhone, i can take very good photos especially of scenery. I don't really edit them at all before i post them anywhere, although sometimes i crop them. I have used the different picture functions (square, video, picture, panorama, etc.), used cropping tool, red eye tool, and filters before.I do like it, because my pictures are usually very good. I will attach a couple of my photos:

Welcome back! Go ahead. Tell me all about your Spring Break. Include photos!
This spring break was very memorable. I went to San Juan and Rio Grande, Puerto Rico with my dad. We went deep sea fishing for 4 hours and $1100, but didn't catch a single thing. We aren't sure why, besides fishing is a hit or miss sport. We spent a ton of time on the beach of course, and went to the Kioskos de Luquillo. These kiosks are a line of shacks (about 75 total) that each have different things. A lot of them had bars so we went there most nights. Before the fishing (or really boat ride) trip, we went up to the cloud forest/rain forest called El Yunque. I have plenty of pictures from there, and I also fell into the waterfall and face-planted onto a Prius-sized rock. My phone got wet and stopped working, but started working fully again the next day. I got to translate and speak Spanish a lot, which is also what I was wanting to do.
Besides go to PR, I hung out with friends back here and fished. So, all in all, it was a fantastic spring break, and I never wanted it to end, but knew it had to. I doubled up on the antidepressants and i'm back at school.

Tell me about your weekend. Give me a story, something funny that happened, an experiencing you had, the way you felt, etc. Include photos!
This weekend was full of fun. Friday was the first day of state swimming in Topeka. The team did amazing, and I improved in every event. Because of the ice storm that was supposed to hit, the school had us stay overnight at the Days Inn in Topeka friday night. That was unexpected. The team got to hang out friday night, but we also got ample sleep because State swimming was saturday morning. The finals went very well, and the team got 8th place. That was my last meet ever, and I was pretty emotional after the last race. Sunday I went to PBR with a friend at the sprint center. I usually go every year, and this was fun! Then my long, action-filled weekend came to an end.

Tell me what you believe this cartoon is trying to say. Do you agree or disagree with this idea? Try and look at this from two different perspectives. What is your perspective? What would be an adult/teacher's perspective?
This cartoon is trying to say that American students are falling behind other countries academically because they lack interest in education. I disagree, I think other countries are ahead because they are Asian, so they are naturally smarter, and have stricter parents. Some people believe this is true, and they think that this generation has become very lazy and dont want to learn. With some students, this is true. But to say that ALL of America is like this is false. I'm sure the adults/teachers think that there is a large amount of students like in the picture because they dont have the perspective of teachers in other countries. They SEE kids playing on their phone, or thinking about other things in class. But, their test scores usually reveal that they still learned the material. Maybe American kids are better at multi-tasking and/or having fun and learning at the same time.

Think about the quote above. What does this mean to you? How could this apply to your life? How could this apply to your school work? I would love to give you less work in class if it meant you were going to focus harder on the work. Do you think you would get more out of it? Would that work for you? Why or why not?
"Do less with more focus" to me means that some work is unnecessary and that we should focus in the important tasks and put more work into those. In my life, it would apply to school work. Instead of doing a variety of assignments in different areas, I should have less assignments, and focus in one area. Also, instead of spreading and evenly dividing my time to all of the assignments, i would do only the important ones and spend more time on them. In my opinion, I think that teachers should use this policy. The teachers like to focus on one area at a time- in AP Calc, we do derivatives then integrals, not all at the same time. There are steps to learning- we learn chapter 5, but we do 5.1,5.2,5.3 etc in the right order to learn all the steps. Since teachers like to focus on one area, they should only give work that is necessary to learn that material. Then, have the students focus on that one area, but put more effort and focus into it. They could tell the students that it is for an accuracy grade, so they put in the effort to do it correctly and learn the material. Then, if they miss multiple questions, then the teacher can conference with the student to correct the issues. The student therefore learns more with less work.

Tell me all about your weekend! I sure hope you have photos to share.
I had a very interesting weekend. Friday and Saturday was EKL for swimming. I placed 4th in the 100 back, and was a part of the 200 Medley Relay that got 3rd. I swam very well. After the meet on friday and saturday, the team went out to get food like usual, which I always enjoy. Friday and Saturday nights I was able to hang out with my friends and that is always enjoyable. Yesterday I had to move my grandma from her assisted living facility in Paola, to a nursing home also in Paola. This was a little difficult because all of her things are huge and really heavy, therefore we used my truck to move them. I don't have any pictured to share because I didn't really take any, and the ones i did are not appropriate to put on this blog.

Tell me about some interesting things you have learned about your global issue so far. What have you learned that you didn't know before? Include a couple images from the internet if possible. (Make sure to cite images that are not your own.)
My global issue is mental illness. What i have learned is 2 things: mental illness affects more people than expected, and the suicide rate is much higher than I expected. Most of the information I already knew, but those two things are new knowledge.

You haven't had a chance to tell me about your Sweetheart weekend yet - tell me about it now! Include photos if you have them. Even if you just laid around on the couch and watched Netflix, tell me all about it.
Last weekend, i was not able to go to the dance. Friday and saturday night were devoted to partying. I went to several different after-parties on saturday night. The majority of the afternoon was used for writing an essay for Baylor University. I wrote this essay to apply for a full-tuition scholarship. It had a maximum of 750 words so it was relatively quick and easy to complete.

10 years from now I will be a medical resident in a hospital, hopefully in Texas or OPRMC here in Johnson County. I will have finished undergrad studies, grad/medical school, and will have started my 3 year residency. At that point i will be Dr. Cade Blackburn M.D. F.A.C.S. Emergency Medicine. I will also be 28 years old and should have a wife and should be starting a family.

What is email? When do you use email in your own personal life? List reasons and ways that people use email. What do you know about "email etiquette"? EXPLAIN.
Email is a quick way to send virtual "letters" to people with subjects, attachments, and bodies of text. I use email in my personal life for many uses such as emailing my family, friends, teachers, and colleges. Email is a quick way to send information to someone over the internet, so its a convenience to communicating with people. There are many different email domains such as Google, Yahoo, AOL, business domains, and school domains. Depending on the person to whom you are sending, the writing should change. If you are emailing something to a friend or family member, it can be treated like a text message. If its a professor, boss, coworker, unknown person, etc. then formal language should be used. Most of the time, you should greet and also say thank you for your time or sincerely in the end. Sometimes its appropriate to say something along the lines of: "I hope your day/week is going well so far" etc. There's usually two types of audiences only: informal and formal.

Yesterday I had you choose a global issue and you wrote about it on your blog. Today on your blog I want you to tell me about two different perspectives of your global issue. Are there people for an against your issue? Do people disagree on your issue? Is it a topic that can cause controversy? Look at the issue for two different perspectives. Tell me about those perspectives.
The topic I chose is Mental Illness. Its difficult to have argumentative sides, but its more of an issue of: is this a big problem?
Some people think that Mental Illness is rare and not a big issue. When it comes to awareness and state/federal funding for programs, they think its not necessary. They really don't want to see a bunch of tax dollars going into Mental Health centers.
Other people, mostly those who have or know someone who has a mental illness, think that it does not have enough attention. Some areas have Mental Health Centers and spend a lot of money for professionals. They want to see more awareness (PSA's maybe), and continue to support programs to help those people.

Mental Health
Without doing any research, what background do you currently have on this issue?
What do you want to know about this issue?
Why did you choose this issue? Had it effected your life? Is it something you are passionate about? Explain.
1. I have a pretty good background on this issue. I have dealt with people in BVHS with mental health issues, it runs in my family, and I also have some illnesses.
2. How many have these issues, treatment and lack thereof, awareness, and different types of illnesses.
3. I chose this issue because I have seen how mental illness has affected the lives of me, my friends, and my family. It is an epidemic that doesn't have much awareness, and there is a large lack of understanding. Most people don't understand it, and if it affects someone, their life will be changed forever and it will be a difficult challenge. It is also is very difficult to treat in teenagers and young adults, because some anti-anxiety/ antidepressants make the illness worse, not better.

Last week I asked your to "think differently" and push yourself to be uncommon with your PSA project using Google Slides. Why do you think I asked you to do that? What is the point? Why not just use bullets and headers? Explain.
The purpose of thinking differently would be to make the PSA unique and different from other classmates' and to make it more interesting. Bullet points and headers are rarely used in PSA's. If they are used, its usually to present facts. But normally we use bullet points and headers in EVERY presentation we do, so we want to avoid doing that, and make it look nice.

What is a public service announcement (PSA)? What do PSA's do? What makes a good PSA? How can you get someone to take action after watching a PSA? What is you PSA idea? Explain in detail.
PSA's are funded commercials that try to get viewers to support or work against something. A good PSA would prove that there is an issue, and effectively animate the viewers. The viewer needs to be convinced that there is a big issue, and if they are convinced enough, they will join that fight. My PSA idea is texting and driving. This is a huge issue, because a ton of accidents are caused by texting. I have arrived on scene of multiple horrific accidents, where people were seriously hurt because the driver was distracted. A lot of injuries and deaths could be avoided if the drivers would focus on driving onle.

I had a swim meet Saturday morning that I did very well at. I swam in the 200 IM Relay (free), 100 free, 100 back, and the 200 free relay. The picture of the scoreboard is of my heat in the 100 free. I was 1st place by 2 seconds. Also, every night, I hung out with the swim team at Trevor's house. It may or may not have been "light bright and polite."

What are you looking forward to this school year? Include some original photos from your phone if you can.
At BVHS, I am involved in many activities. I am involved in debate, NHS, NSHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Swimming, and conservative's club. This is my last year in all of those, as I am a senior. My favorite class would probably be AP Calculus, and AP Spanish, with Coffelt being my favorite teacher. I am looking forward to State Swimming and Graduation.

What are your thoughts on this class so far? Easy? Hard? Informative? Frustrating? What have you learned so far? What do you want to learn? Explain yourself.
So far, in Emerging Technology, I think the class is easy. That's not to say that it will get harder; I believe that it will. I know computers really well, so I don't have much to learn on how to use one, and I will be able to learn in this class easily. Whether it gets harder or not, I will still try for an A and hopefully I learn something from this class.

Upload a photo to your Google Drive and then insert the photo (or photos!) to
your blog post to show me what all you did.
This weekend was eventful, and strenuous. I
started by hanging out with my friends on Friday night, then I had a 10,000
meter practice from 8am-noon Saturday. This was a difficult and painful
practice. Saturday night, I went to see “Taken 3” at the movie theater with my
swim friends, and then we went to a party. Sunday morning, I ate brunch with my
nuclear family and grandparents in Louisburg, and then I relaxed the rest of
the day.
